Ellinwood Chamber Orchestra

Ellinwood Chamber Orchestra

Conductor: Bro. George Supetran

The Ellinwood Chamber Orchestra (EChO), the instrumental ensemble of Ellinwood Malate Church, had its humble beginnings in early 2015 with the holding of weekly informal violin lessons for elementary, high school and college students, and a handful of adults. The core of the initial recruits came from the members of the SS Dames family schooner fellowship, which also helped fund the fledging group as its labor of love.

In June 2015, it had its first recital for violin and later added viola, cello and contrabass. Three recitals have been subsequently held to continue sharpening their skills.

The EChO was formally recognized by the EMC last July 2016, and regularly performs in worship services and special occasions. EChO has held two post-Christmas music camps in 2015 (Talisay, Batangas) and 2016 (Baguio City) to provide intensive training to its members. As part of its outreach, the group rendered music at nearby UCCP churches and youth Christmas camps during this time.

The group occasionally gets invited to national Church events, LCSMC gatherings and special events within the UCCP community. Recently, the EChO provided the accompaniment for the drama-musical production “Missing” of the ACTS 29 Theater Ministry with some of the original music penned and orchestrated by its conductor George Bernard Supetran.

The young musical ensemble regularly performs at EMC services to enhance the community of faith’s worship experience and sharpen its musicality in giving back the glory and praise to God Almighty, the Audience of One.

The Youth Choir sings bright and early in the 7:00 A.M. English

The choir was also responsible for organizing the “Halakhakan” concert in 1991 featuring the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, which was a major fundraiser for the construction of Ellinwood’s Youth Center, now the site of the Ellinwood Christian School.

The Youth Choir was blessed to have been under the guidance of the following conductors, namely: Rachel Dadap, Lois Malaki-Espinosa, Rev. Don Espina, Joval Labata, Aileen Espinosa-Cura, Israel Bombasi, Vera Pepito-Acosta and Boots Posadas-Botter. The choir is currently under the baton of Atty. Delilah Grace Magtolis, accompanied by Mr. Joshua Agarrado.

Through the years, the Youth Choir has helped foster friendships and enhanced talents among its members. More importantly, it has served as an important component of the church’s ministry to the young people who treat the Youth Choir as one of their primary outlet of service to God. Indeed, the Youth Choir members best exemplify the chorus of “Give of Your Best to the Master”, as they strive to continue giving to God the strength of their youth.

Vesper Choir

Vesper Choir

5:00PM Vesper Service, Main Sanctuary

Conductor: Mr. Israel Commandante ; Pianist: Ms. Emma Linda Madrazo-Chavez

The Vesper Choir is the worship team of the UCCP Ellinwood-Malate Church (EMC) during their 5PM Vesper Service. Composed of professionals and volunteers from various backgrounds, this group shares their passion through music to minister God’s message and love. The Vesper Choir is one of the worship teams showcasing EMC’s culture of bringing together people through heart-touching music.

Pastor Ben then asked the Order of Joy Fellowship (Tagalog Christian Youth Fellowship) to be the regular choir for that service. Thus, the Vesper Choir was born and has regularly sung at the 5:00 P.M. worship service. Since its formal conception in 1985, the Vesper Choir has also presented Christmas Musicals, conducted visitations with performances at other churches in the conference, regularly assisted necrological services, and has actively participated in joint concerts in celebrating Ellinwood’s  anniversary celebrations. The UCCP-EMC Vesper worship service in the 70’s and early 80’s has no permanent assigned choir. The choirs from the different worship services took turns in singing in the vesper worship service every first Sunday of the month or communion Sunday. In other Sundays, the Anthem and Offertory were rendered by invited guest musicians and instrumentalists.

In 1984, members of the Order of Joy (OJ) Fellowship (Tagalog CYF) were encouraged by the late Rev. Benjamin Dela Peña of the Tagalog Service to form a singing group with Bro. Israel Bombasi as their conductor and concurrent accompanist. Initially the OJ singing group was assigned only during the first Sunday of the month (communion Sunday) to relieve other choirs from their Vesper Service assignments. Aside from singing in the Vesper, the OJ singing group was also requested to sing in the necrological services, visitations and in other local church events.

After a year of singing once a month in the Vesper service, Rev. Dela Peña proposed to the UCCP-EMC church council to have the OJ singing group as the choir permanently assigned in the Vesper service. The Church Council approved the said proposal and the faith journey of the new choir named the Vesper Choir of UCCP-EMC began in 1985. The following were the conductors who served the Lord through the Vesper choir—Israel Bombasi, Ricardo Mazo, Prof. Deborah Reyes, Samuel Guererro, Jim Rey Baloloy, Joy Nilo and Israel Comandante, the current conductor.

Rainbow Choir

Rainbow Choir

Conductor: Mrs. Jochebed Perocho-Garcia

The Rainbow Choir, Ellinwood Malate Church’s chorale group for children, started as a project of the SS Hessel schooners’ club. Ellinwood’s former children’s choir, the Cherubim Choir, had long been inactive, and the SS Hessel members wanted their children to have an avenue for serving God through music. The Rainbow Choir was then organized for kids aged 12 and below. Soon, children from other schooners clubs joined, and the Rainbow Choir started regularly rendering the offertory anthem every fifth Sunday of the month.

The Rainbow Choir has sung at a series of Christmas shows at the Manila Hotel and the New World Renaissance Hotel; presented their own musical entitled “Psalty’s Christmas Calamity”; and been featured at the Christmas special of Sharon Cuneta in 2006 in her show on ABS-CBN, where the kids sang with Sharon herself.

The Rainbow Choir has been handled by Dr. Nelita “Baby” Reyes, Sam Ezrael Malaki, Vera Pepito-Acosta, Annie May Espina and Ellen Morada. The choir is presently directed by Jochebed Perocho-Garcia.

The church envisions that more children will become part of the Rainbow Choir, and in so doing, be encouraged to continue serving God in the music ministry when they grow older.

Psalm Ensemble

Psalm Ensemble

Conductor: Sis. Vera Pepito-Acosta

The Psalm Ensemble started when several senior members of the Youth Choir led by Vera Pepito-Acosta, its conductor since its inception, organized a smaller group to sing a cappella songs. It was first called the Young Adults Chorale when it sang several anthems from the Christmas album entitled “An Evening in December” during one vesper service.

When it was invited to be one of the guests at the July 1997 concert of Rhoda Isidro-Pepito at the PCI Bank Theater, the group decided to formally adopt the name Psalm Ensemble. Since then, it has shared its music with various churches in Cavite, Manila, Baguio, Bulacan, Ilocos Norte, Dumaguete and Pampanga. It has also held major concerts at Ellinwood’s main sanctuary in 2000 and at the Philam Life Theater in 2011.

In 1998, the Psalm Ensemble recorded its first album called “Of Psalms and Love”, which was used to raise additional funds for the construction of the Music Center. This was followed in 2003 with the release of “The Christmas Album”. The Psalm Ensemble was also part of the choral compilations “Divine Symphony” which featured school-based choirs, and “UCCP Voices” – a fundraising project of the UCCP South Luzon Jurisdiction Christian Women’s Association.

Through all these activities, the Psalm Ensemble prays that the Lord Almighty will continue to be glorified, who is the Giver of their talents and the Reason why they sing.

Truly, Ellinwood’s music ministry is a reflection of God’s empowerment and a manifestation of His unfailing grace. What a joy it is to know that the melodious music that is heard each Sunday is but a taste of the indescribable beauty of the music that is played in heaven.
