Holy Week 2021

Lenten Retreat Guide

01 April 2021

The Pandemic has been with us for more than a year and will be with us a little longer. We have seen how a lot of our activities including our worship services have moved to an online platform, together with much of our work, classes, meetings, seminars and even family reunions have moved to a digital/virtual venue.

Except for Medical Frontliners and other essential workers, we have found ourselves mostly at home.

But have you learned to:

  1. Pray more? If you are with your family: Are you praying WITH your family more?
  2. Read the Bible more? If you are with your family: Are you reading the Bible TOGETHER?

The Pandemic has given us not only the opportunity to PRAY MORE and to READ THE BIBLE MORE but also to LOOK TO GOD MORE.

Maundy Thursday – Worship Guide

“Do I Have A Part In Your Life?”

01 April 2021

Maundy Thursday takes its name from the Latin word “Mandatum” which means “command” or “Mandate.” This refers to the command/mandate Jesus gave to His disciples to offer their lives in the service of others. Maundy Thursday’s observance includes the Celebration of the Holy Communion in commemoration of Jesus’ last supper with His disciples before His arrest and crucifixion.

The Holy Communion is a memorial of our Savior’s death by which He atoned for all our sins. May it be clear that this “Lord’s Supper at home” does not in any way replace the sacramental celebration in public worship at church. We uphold communal celebration of the sacraments in God’s house with member families and individuals gathering and doing this act as often as we do it in remembrance of Him. It is just that the current situation forbids us from coming together in keeping with the social/physical distancing order.

The second part of the liturgy of Maundy Thursday is the “Service of Tenebrae.” At this time, as we are confined in our own homes, we will dispense with the turning all lights into “off” position and instead use a black cloth to symbolize “Darkness” that has enveloped the circumstance of the disciples when our Lord Jesus Christ was arrested after the Last Supper and Prayer at Gethsemane.

As the candle is lit during the Last Supper, it will put-off at the start of the service of Tenebrae during the singing of the hymn “Above The Hills Of Time.” The black cloth will be laid on the extinguished candle after the last reading and during the moment of silence before the closing hymn “My faith Looks Up to Thee” to symbolize that Darkness has come into the lives of the disciples and our vigil begins until the early morning on Resurrection Sunday.
