“The Equipping Of The Followers Of The Lord”
6th Sunday After Epiphany
2 KINGS 2:1-12
Christ chose death, an ignominious death of crucifixion, in order to save us. His choice of death was his own decision, as an expression of his perfect obedience to god the father. He did that so that we might have life or we may live. Was it useless? Was it useless to die on the cross for our sake? Or for your sake? This is a question directly addressed to us, whom he died for.
It is easy for Jesus to allow us to die in sin and be condemned to the fires of hell anyway, we are filthy sinners; but instead, he took a great risk by dying for us. We have read in the gospel the agony he experienced as a phenomenon called ‘hematidrosis”, which he experienced in the garden of gethsemane, where his blood mingled with his sweat and formed beads that came out from the pores of his body. That phenomenon was brought about by a combination of struggle and anxiety that capillaries over his body burst. Yes Christ had experienced such kind of agony out of his great and unconditional love for us.
Our lord Jesus Christ knew, that in his death, there would be others who would follow his example, and be willing to die like him that others may live.
