“The Miracle of Giving and Feeding”
9th Sunday After Pentecost
2 Kings 4:42-44
The story of the loaves and fishes is a very familiar one to most Christians. Here is Jesus Christ, out in the middle of nowhere, teaching, preaching, and healing, doing His thing; and to show us God’s awesome power and might, He creates enough food to feed all who were present.
And it is at this point that I remember when Necy and I were doing mission in Mabini, Batangas way, way back in 1981. We already had two children, 2 years and 8 mos. Paul Carlos and Eunice Christine, 1 year and 2 mos. old. Back then, Mabini, Batangas was very rustic- no electricity, no water except from a well 250 meters above sea level. Never did we imagine that Mabini, Batangas would be a tourist spot area especially for sea divers…
One very early morning, Necy told me that we did not have rice anymore and we may skip lunch unless I will do something. It was past 11 o’clock when Paul Carlos approached his mama and told her, “Gutom na ako…” Necy glanced at me and told our son that it was not yet 12 noon. We eat our lunch at 12 noon. Paul Carlos stayed on. About ten minutes before 12 noon, Paul Carlos came over and said, “Kakain na…” I told him, “Not yet, we eat our lunch at 12 noon.” We heard a knock on our back door and as I opened it, a man told me he needed to cut down the banana tree since half were already ripe; and another thing, he shared to us his harvest of red rice from his lot in the mountain. Coincidence, or God’s provision on time?
