“God’s Reign is Obedience to His Will”
5th Sunday in Kingdomtide
CEN and Children’s Sunday
One Saturday morning, mommy Sally told her 3-year old daughter Betty that they will go to the Mall to buy her the doll house that she had been praying to Jesus for. Since it is a Saturday and a week-end sale, Mommy Sally told little Betty that if she says, follow her, she should follow and if she says hold her hands, she will hold her hands. Failure to not obey will mean no doll house and she will be lost in the crowd. Upon entering the mall, the mother and daughter saw a large crowd. Mommy Betty told little Betty, “ok darling, there’s a big crowd out there, so hold my skirt tight so you can follow me wherever I go, ok?” And little Betty said “yes” with a nod. And on they went. After 10 minutes of finding their way to the Toy section, there was this mall sound with the voice, “Attention all shoppers, if you are the guardian of a 3-year old girl named Betty, please come to cashier number 10. Little Betty is holding on to a blue skirt which she would not want to let go of.”
In today’s sermon, as we look at the movements, motives and mixed reactions in the gospel reading, we will see different attitudes towards being followers, being servants, the right attitudes that may mirror our own, or that may challenge our faith, for as we shall see, being a servant-follower is a matter of faith and humble obedience. May this meditation today prove that God is present in us.
